Why Every Band Needs the Right Video

Music has always been about connecting with people. Whether you're an original artist releasing your latest single or a cover band entertaining packed venues every weekend, video has become one of the most powerful ways to reach your audience.
Over the past 20 years at Cherrywood Productions, I've had the privilege of working on a wide variety of productions, from documentaries and corporate films to weddings, promotional videos and music videos. One thing I've learnt is that no two bands are the same, and neither should their videos be.
The approach I take depends entirely on what you want your video to achieve.
Original Bands – Bringing Your Music to Life
For original artists, a music video is far more than a performance filmed from different angles.
It's an opportunity to tell a story, create an atmosphere and give people a visual connection to your music. Every decision, from the location and lighting to the camera movement and editing style, should support the emotion of the song.
Some videos call for a cinematic narrative, while others are all about the performance. Often, the strongest productions combine both.
My job is to understand your music and help translate it into something that feels authentic to you as an artist.
Cover Bands – Videos That Help You Get Booked
Cover bands have a completely different objective.
You're not selling a new song—you’re selling an experience.
Venues, wedding couples, festivals and event organisers want to know one thing:
"What will my audience experience if I book this band?"
That's why a promotional video for a cover band needs to be energetic, engaging and full of atmosphere.
Fast-paced editing, audience reactions, musicians enjoying themselves and a packed dance floor all help tell that story far better than words ever could.
A professional promotional video gives potential clients confidence before they've even picked up the phone.
Every Band Has Its Own Story
One of the things I enjoy most about filming musicians is that every project is different.
Some artists arrive with a detailed concept already planned.
Others simply have a great song and need help developing ideas for the video.
Whatever stage you're at, the process always starts with a conversation.
Together we can decide whether your project needs a cinematic narrative, a live performance, a studio shoot or a combination of styles to create something that truly represents your music.
More Than Just Filming
Creating a great music video is about much more than pressing the record button.
Planning, lighting, camera movement, editing, colour grading and pacing all play an important part in producing a finished film that keeps people watching.
The aim is always the same—to create a video that you're proud to share and that encourages people to discover more of your music.
Thinking About Your Next Music Video?
Whether you're an original artist preparing to release your next single or a cover band looking for a promotional video that helps secure more bookings, I'd love to hear about your ideas.
Every project starts with a chat, and together we can create something that captures your music, your personality and your performance.
